Cultivating Culture Through
Film.

Our Story

The Start of
Reels & Roots

Reels & Roots was co-founded by Dr. Russell J. Ledet, Mallory Brown-Ledet, Konah Williams, and Raymond Powell, a team of storytellers, strategists, and community advocates united by one belief: film has the power to heal, connect, and transform communities. What began as a small effort to host local film screenings in Indianapolis has grown into a movement that bridges art, conversation, and collective healing. Each co-founder brings a distinct perspective, ensuring every Reels & Roots experience is rooted in purpose, representation, and impact.

Our Approach

The Reels & Roots Experience

At Reels & Roots, our work is grounded in four guiding principles that shape every screening, partnership, and community conversation. These principles ensure that what we do is not just about watching films — it’s about creating spaces for reflection, healing, and growth.

Step
(No. 01)

Watch

We curate powerful films that tell authentic stories — films that challenge perspectives, uplift underrepresented voices, and inspire communities to see one another more clearly.

Step
(No. 02)

Reflect

After the credits roll, we invite audiences to pause and take in what they have seen. Reflection helps individuals process emotions, recognize new perspectives, and consider how the stories connect to their own lives.

Step
(No. 03)

Discuss

We then bring people together to share those reflections out loud. Through guided conversations, panels, and community dialogue, we create space for understanding, empathy, and action that extends beyond the screen.

Step
(No. 04)

Grow

Change doesn’t happen in a single screening. We return to these spaces again and again, nurturing cultural growth and deepening community connection through consistent engagement.
